In this game you take control of an Owl named Shard, one of the guardians of the great Ga'Hoole tree, fighting for justice wherever you fly. This game does not directly follow the storyline of the book series, and although it uses the same elements, it is an off-shoot story. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [2] Game Control & Shards' Moves ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Flying - Rotating the controller up towards you makes Shard ascend, rotating it away from you makes Shard descend. Moving it left or right turns Shard in that direction, while rotating the controller in a clockwise or counter-clockwise manner will make Shard bank in that direction. Left - Standard Attack. Can start several combos, your bread-and-butter attack. Up - Barge Attack . Must be unlocked. Destroys enemy armor and knocks enemies backwards. You must use this attack to remove armor from an armored enemy before you are able to damage them. Right - Throw Attack. Must be unlocked. Grabs the enemy and spins them around, launching them in the direction you're pointing. Can be used to launch an enemy into the landscape, including any water or fire (fire catches them on fire). You may direct the angle you launch them by titling up or down on the controller. This rarely damages an enemy unless you are throwing them into something. Many times if you are attacked and execute a counterattack, you will be throwing the enemy. If you throw an enemy with armor into terrain, they will lose a piece of their armor. Down - Send Wingman. Sends one of your available Wingmen to the target you current have sighted. The sight does not have to be red - only gray - for your Wingmen to attack the target. Wingmen will not target boss monsters, stationary enemies, or those wearing armor. "-" - Back flip. Must be unlocked. Turns your Owl to face the opposite direction. "+" - Pause. Brings up the Pause menu, and closes that menu when open. "1" - Target Lock. Locks onto the closest target, and stays locked on no matter how they fly. (Except in some rare occasions). "Move Wii remote left or right quickly" - Barrel Roll. Quickly rolls left or right. Can be used in regular flight, or to dodge counterattacks. "B - Brake. Slows down your flight speed. "B" & "2" Buttons together - Corkscrew. Requires 1 unit of Prowess bar Does a spinning speed boost attack (Corkscrew). Unlocked in the second Mission in the Desert of Kuneer. Hitting an enemy while executing this will do damage to that enemy. Can be used against a group of enemies to hit several of them at once. "A" Button - Action Button. Pick up Hot Coals or release Hot Coal(1x), Grab & Release for Dive Attack, steal or release an egg chick (in the bonus mission). Also does other various 'claw' actions as dictated by the circumstances. Spinning Slam. When you have 1 unit of prowess, you can preform the Spinning Slam. When you are near an enemy, the 'A' icon will appear over their head. Press "A" to grab the enemy, you will take them and start spinning toward the ground. Press "A" again when the icon appears to slam them into the ground. This slam will destroy armor. If you do not press "A" the second time, the attack will fail and deal damage to you as well. This move takes a very long time to execute, but does a large amount of damage. Can't be performed on most Bosses. Counter Attack. When an enemy targets you, you're able to launch a counterattack to avoid being damaged. The enemy will appear with a thick red circle around them, and if you can counterattack, a D-Pad direction to be pressed to counterattack. When you're being attacked you can avoid it a couple of ways: Doing a Barrel Roll, Diving very sharply, placing a large obstacle between you and your attacker, or doing a Corkscrew (it will usually hit your attacker). If you do counterattack, it will just act as a simple throw and all the regular throwing possibilities affect it. Cross-hair. Your cross-hairs will be present if there is a target close enough within your sight line. Red Cross hairs indicate that you can perform an action on the target. Dark gray cross hairs indicate you are focused on an enemy/obstacle/item, but the object is too far away to interact with. Gizzuition Radar. Gizzuition radar appears in the lower-left corner of the screen. It will show where objectives, enemies, and edges of the level are. It also shows what height the object is in relation to your position. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [3] Combos ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| These are combos you can perform on an enemy when you are attacking them. Some of these combos must be unlocked after killing a specified number of enemies. left, left, left left, left, up left, up, right, left left, right, left, left |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [4] Prowess ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Prowess is a special energy you have to deal special attacks or do certain moves. Prowess is gained by defeating Enemies or Obstacles; and sometimes you earn it after completing a sub-task of a Mission. Your Prowess bar has 3 'Units', each special move you do reduces your current amount by 1 unit. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [5] Wingmen ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Along the course of your journey you will get several Wingmen that will fly beside you and assist you during battle. The number of Wingmen you have is represented by the bird icons under your status bar. When these icons are green, the Wingman is ready to go, When they are Red, they are unavailable. You can get 3 Wingmen total, and Wingmen are 'readied' as your Prowess bar fills up. Use 'Down' on the directional pad to send a Wingman to attack a target that you have your cross-hairs on. Note: Even if you build your Prowess up to replenish your Wingmen, if they are engaged in a previous attack, they will not be ready until they are done with that assault. Enemies killed by Wingmen will not earn you any Prowess or Shinies (Coins). You can still attack enemies you have sent a Wingman after, it will be considered a 'Team Attack'. You may also steal the 'Killing Blow' from a Wingman to earn Prowess/Coins for that kill. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [6] Safe/Distance Indicator ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Your 'Safe' Indicator appears in the bottom left corner of the screen during certain Missions. It indicates when you are too close or far from a predetermined target. Bright Green is Safe; Brown is 'OK' distance; Exclamation Point and/or Red show you are too far or too close. In many of these Missions where the Indicator is shown, success depends on paying close attention to it. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [7] Items & Terrain Interaction ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Hot Coals Hot Coals sit in Braziers throughout certain missions. Fly towards them and press 'A' to pick up 2 Hot Coals, one in each claw. These can be thrown at flying enemies or installations. To do so, press 'A' when the red target appears on an enemy. You cannot preform regular attacks when you are holding Hot Coals, but any Counterattacks done will set the enemy aflame. Also, some missions will have other owls that carry baskets of Hot Coals instead of the standard brazier; these owls are called "Fire Carriers". Coins (Shinies) Coins are used to pay for Armor, and each collected gives a slight boost to your Prowess. Usually they appear in lines, adjust your flight path to go straight through the line. Each enemy kill will create a certain number of Coins that will lock-on to you and increase your temporary Prowess. Wind Tunnels Conal shaped wind tunnels that give you and/or enemies a massive speed boost. They are one way in the direction from the cone to the tube. Sandstorms Tornados of sand that only appear in the desert of Kuneer. Running into them will thrown you off course and may cause light damage. Fleck Beams Blue "lightning" that makes flying very hard. Also seems to have a magnetic effect that pulls you into the towers emitting the beams if you are too close. Scrolls Scrolls only appear in an areas' Bonus Mission. Each Scroll opens up an Image in your Gallery. There are 25 total, 5 in each area. Your Distance Indicator will come on and act as a guide to a Scroll when you get within its range. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [8] Battlesets ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Training Claws - Free - no bonus Swift Steel - Tiny Attack bonus, small Defense bonus, decent Speed bonus Valor Rose - Small Attack/Defense bonus, decent Prowess bonus Diamond Dash - Decent Attack bonus, large Defense bonus, highest Speed Bonus Golden Heart - Large Defense/Attack bonus, decent Health bonus Burning Spirit - Full Defense bonus, large Attack bonus, Full Prowess bonus Iron Fortitude - 500 Shinies - Full Attack/Defense/Health bonus |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [9] Story Missions ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| [9.1] The Island of Hoole [9.11] Beginning Mission When you gain control of Shard, follow Allomere around the tree and hop into the Wind Tunnels when possible. After the scene ends, grab some hot coals from the Brazier and strike the object in front of you. After this scene, grab some Hot Coals from the Fire Carrier and light all four torches. Again, you must observe another cut scene. Kill the 2 bats they pit you against. After such, you will have to learn to counterattack, then fight six bats. Defeat them all to end the level. [9.12] The Island of Hoole Bonus Missions * Owlet Rescue, Survival, Speed Flying [9.2]Desert of Kuneer [9.21] An Ally in the Sand Your mission is to rescue the eagle Streak from the clutches of the Crows. Start off by quickly dispatching the three bats that you first come upon. Then fly to the star mark on your radar, and follow the bat through the sandstorms. At the end, take out the three bats, free the eagle by knocking off the sticks holding the cage closed, then finish the four Crows that appear. [9.22] Desert Eagle Follow Streak to each Bat Sanctuary - stay close and mind your Safe Indicator. You will come upon a sanctuary-grab 2 Hot Coals, target and destroy the sanctuary. Four or five bats will appear, defeat them then follow Streak to the next sanctuary. At this sanctuary, do the same thing as before (destroying the catapult isn't required). Three Bat Scouts will appear after the sanctuaries' destruction. Follow Streak to the next sanctuary. Two Bat Scouts and a Catapult will be waiting. Dispatch the Sanctuary and three more Bat Scouts will appear. Defeat all five bats to move on. At this next section, about five bats and two Pure Ones will appear. Defeat them all to end the mission. [9.23]Thieves in the Night Starting at Streak's nest, a star will appear and you will have to follow the bats and try to get close enough to steal the Owlet. They fly in set paths and you cannot get too far away from them or you will fail the mission. You can follow the bats until they get close - which takes a while - or you can try to dive in on them from above and cut them off. After grabbing each Owlet, get back to the top of the canyons and use the Wind Tunnels to get back to Streak's nest. You may have to dodge Bat attacks if you're not quick enough returning. Do this three times to finish the Mission. [9.24] Into the Hideout Your goal is to take the Hot Coals from the center and hit each hideout twice with them. As you fight, multiple bats will start attacking you. Not a hard battle, destroy the 8 Hideouts first then kill the 7-8 Bats. [9.25] The Chieftain Strikes Use the Hot Coals in the center of the area to destroy the 6 towers. Each tower takes two hot coal hits before going down. After they are all gone, the Bat Chieftain busts out of the center area, accompanied by Bat Scouts. The Bat Chieftain can only be hurt with Hot Coals. You do not have to kill the support bats to win, only the chieftain. [9.26] Desert of Kuneer Bonus Missions * Owlet Rescue, Bombing, Survival, Speed Flying [9.3] The Forest Kingdom of Tyto [9.31] Pure Ones Pursuit Follow the Pure Ones to their hideout. You must follow a certain distance from them, not too close and not too far. Relatively easy and short, although the area after climbing the mountain can be very tricky. Avoid going for the Coin line after the summit, it is very hard to get to without losing the pursuit. After you reach the destination, You will have to kill nine enemies (eight initially, then an extra one will appear). Use your Wingmen to their full potential, then finish off the stragglers. After that, cut the five Tytos loose from their cages. Start speeding towards the resistance hideout afterward, avoiding any enemies, hitting all the Wind Tunnels in your way, and using your Corkscrew whenever needed. [9.32] Resistance Evacuation This is a very hard Mission. 3 of 5 Carriers must survive for mission success. Stay near the carriers at all times to keep the carriers moving. The female owl will call out when an enemy wave attacks. Each 'wave' will contain three enemies. On the first trip, 1 carrier will leave, and will be attacked by 2 waves of enemies. After that carrier is safe, two carriers will leave, and they will be attacked by 1 wave each (possibly more). Then a final two carriers will leave - these carriers will fly a great distance apart- three waves of enemies will attack these carriers. Try your best to divide your Wingmen between each wave, so a single carrier doesn't get swarmed. Each wave will only attack one Carrier, and if that Carrier dies, the Enemies will attempt to fly out of the Area and disappear. After you defeat a wave, and the carriers reach their safe nest, fly back to the extraction point. In the last wave, you will have to destroy the Armor on the Scouts before sending your wingmen at them. [9.33] Lighting the Way Find a Fire-Carrier and grab some Hot Coals from them. Your objective is to light all 16-24? lamps. Head East and start with the first set there, using the Wind Tunnels when needed. Enemies will start to show up as you light more torches. Focus only on lighting the torches, and Corkscrew any attacks by enemies. A very easy Mission. [9.34] Fire Fight Escort the Water Carriers and protect them as they extinguish the fires. This is a bit easier than previous escort missions, as the Water Carriers will stay in their general areas and the enemy attack groups will be small. The Water Carriers will fight 3 'fires', and enemies will attack at each area. The 1st wave is only bats, the 2nd Pure Ones, and the 3rd Pure One Elites. Constantly use your Wingmen when they are ready to go! Any friend or enemy will catch fire if they fly or crash into the burning area (or are thrown into it). Grab Shinies and dive to increase your prowess in your downtime at the beginning. If Shard catches on fire, dive into the river to extinguish yourself. [9.35] Pure Retaliation Find a Fire-Carrier and grab some Hot Coals from them, use the Coals to destroy the first set of Catapults(6). Enemies will appear, avoid them, and either counterattack with the Hot Coals or dodge their attacks, heading over the river to the next set of 6 Catapults. After destroying those 6, head deeper in near the enemy tower, and destroy the last 6 catapults. After that point, defeat the Pure Ones that appear (wingmen are available to use). Fly up to the Tower, slowing your speed to a near stop and cut the lines holding the Tower up. [9.36]The Forest Kingdom of Tyto Bonus Missions * Owlet Rescue, Bombing, Survival, Speed Flying [9.4] The Glauxian Brothers Retreat [9.41] Race to the Retreat You must race your Wingmen to the Glauxian Retreat. This is a standard race like the Bonus Mission. If you miss 6 rings, you will fail. This is simple, but not easy. Bring along some speed enhancing armor for an easier win. Sometimes it will start you off facing the wrong direction. :( [9.42] A Curious Convoy Follow the bats through the ice narrows, and along their treacherous path. Getting too close to them isn't an issue, so just make sure to hit all the Wind Tunnels. At the destination, prepare to fight 16 enemies, including hagsfiends! Not a hard mission but an all-out brawl. [9.43] Shard to the Rescue You will have to rescue Glauxian brothers from the cages they are being carried in. Go to the stars on the radar then take out all target-able enemies near the Pure One Carrier. After you defeat all the associated enemies, take out the carrier with a single hit. There are five Owls to free total. [9.44] Battle at the mine You will be attacked by 3 Pure One Protectors and 4 Hagsfiends. Attack and use your teammates to destroy the threats. After that, fly toward the Fleck Pillars, there is a Hot Coal brazier on the first ridge, and also one up on the higher hills behind the Fleck Pillars. Do not bother with the Hagsfiends, Pure One Protectors or Ballistas. Target each pillar and hit them with 3 hot coals to destroy them. The beams around the Fleck Pillars will pull you in and will make maneuvering very hard, and you will take a lot of damage while losing control. Two of the Fleck Pillars have Ballistas right next to them, which makes targeting the pillars themselves difficult. Destroy the Fleck Pillars quickly to win and get the gold medal. [9.45] The Queen's Game This mission is all about defeating the Hagsfiend Queen. She will be alone at first, but will call up a force field by summoning 'Fleck Bats' that carry baskets with flecks to create a force field around her. You will need to defeat 3 Fleck Bats once she summons the force field to remove it temporarily. There will also be Pure One Protectors that will attack you while all this is going on. Focus on the Queen and the Fleck Bats when summoned (they take 1 hit each). To kill the Fleck Bats, either send in your Wingmen after them or attack then stop and hover close to them to re-target for each bat. The Queen is quite hard to follow, and is hard to combo on. DO NOT use the 'Up' Ram move to start a combo, she will deflect it and possibly damage you. Getting a gold here is done easily by defeating most of force field bats and the Queen. [9.46] The Glauxian Brothers Retreat Bonus Missions * Owlet Rescue, Bombing, Survival, Speed Flying [9.5] The Beaks [9.51] No Owl Gets Left Behind Take the Wind Tunnels towards the star on your radar. Your Wingman will be imprisoned by Fleck Bats. Take out 4 quickly to free him. After that, its your team vs eleven assorted enemies. You know what to do. [9.52] Defense Destruction Take the Wind Tunnels to the objective, grab the Hot Coals and destroy 4 Catapults. After that, take out the 4 remaining Pure Ones. Travel to the main fort and destroy 4 Catapults and 3 Ballistas. The only source of Hot Coals are in the middle of the tower; strike an installation then loop in for coals, then attack one on the other side. Use Wingmen to fend off the attackers, but don't focus on them yourself. [9.53] Breaking the Signal Fly into the foray and locate the Hot Coal Brazier(s), target only the Fleck Pillars -they take 3 hits each- ignore everything else! Use any Prowess you get for Corkscrews. After those 4 are gone, grab more coals and target the Fleck Tower itself. Five hot coal hits will take it down. [9.54] Clawing Towards the Forge This level is one huge cavern and you are all alone, with no Wingmen. Fly through the cavern, avoiding the Swinging Obstacles, and go through the gate that opens. Again, you will have to fly to the next gate. Follow the star on the radar if you get disorientated. After the second gate, you will have to fight four Pure One Elites in a very small chamber, but only one has armor on. After you've killed them, fly through the next section, which is full of lava. Is is very easy to crash and catch fire in this section. Through the next gate is 6 more enemies in another very small chamber. Afterward, the next is a passage that leads deep into the earth. It is very tight in here especially with the speed you build up. [9.55] Allomere's Fury The last mission! You start off in a fiery cavern, with Pure Ones, Hagsfiends, Catapults and Furnaces. Your objective is to destroy the Furnaces with Hot Coals that are sitting high up on ledges. Even higher above these ledges is a circular area with a ring of Shinies in it. When attacking the Furnaces, your shots will fail if there is steam rising from the Furnace. There are 6 surrounding the main spire, and one directly on the spire. After defeating all of them, chase Allomere through the long, winding tunnel. You cannot catch up to him, but there is Hot Coal Braziers placed in the tunnel. When you are close enough hit him with any you pick up - it'll make the last fight easier. Allomere finally stops to fight in a small cavern near the end. Allomere can be hard. He'll counter a lot of your initial attacks; and will attack you often. He'll also throw you often and recover from throws himself very quickly. Break his armor first of all, then keep pounding away until he is no more. You're done here! Sit back and enjoy the ending! |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [10] Bonus Missions ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Each Bonus Mission has 3-5 smaller Missions that you can participate in. Fly close to the points on the map and press "2" to start the bonus missions. Coins always regenerate in the main area of Bonus Missions. Coins are available within each small mission, but do not go after them if you are going for the gold medal. Survival - Defeat several waves of enemies. Coins are available, but avoid them to save time. The Corkscrew can work wonders here. Speed Race - Follow a set path through rings within a specified time. Coins are available, but avoid them unless they are in your immediate path. Equip your fastest battleset for these races. Owlet Rescue - You must rescue Owlets from marauding enemies, and return them to the nest where you began the Mission. Fly to any one of the Star blips on the Radar, and chase the enemy down. Try to take shortcuts or cut off the flight path of the enemy to get close enough to grab the Owlet. Once you have the Owlet, race back to the nest, avoiding the attacking enemies by using your Corkscrew and/or Wind Tunnels. Three rescued Owlets will end the Mission. Bomber Challenge - You must destroy a certain amount of enemy installations in a short amount of time. There will be Fire Carriers, flying enemies, and Catapults. Grab Hot Coals, target and destroy the Catapults, and avoid/counterattack the flying enemies' attacks. Fairly easy to get a gold if you just focus on Catapult destruction. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [11] Scroll Locations ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| The Island of Hoole * bottom of main tree, next to the water * on the side of small mountain near speed challenge * At top of tree, above some branches * In cove below Survival challenge * in upper part of tree trunk, near lighted windows The Desert of Kuneer * At start head left to a small lake - in the wall next to lake * In flat desert, east of survival challenge, near dead trees * Far into the canyon lands, at main bat sanctuary. Crow - A medium strength & defense aerial enemy. Pure One - An enemy Owl that wears Armor. To damage them you must use a barge attack to first destroy their armor. You cannot send Wingmen after them until their armor is removed. They can also recover from Throw attacks quickly. Pure One Scout - Weaker then regular Pure Ones. Do not wear Armor, but faster than Pure Ones. Pure One Elite - Stronger than regular Pure Ones, and with full Armor (3 plates). Pure One Protector - Similar to the other Pure Ones, wears body armor. Catapult - Launches a large boulder every few seconds. Not very accurate, but can hit you easily if you're flying in a straight path. Destroy with Hot Coals. Ballista - Similar to the catapult, but fires faster and with more accuracy. Destroy with Hot Coals. Bat Hideout - Not an enemy per say, but an enemy structure built by the bats. Destroy with Hot Coals. Fleck Tower - A blue, obelisk-like tower that helps to create a Fleck Beam. Destroy with Hot Coals. Fiery Furnace - Only present in one level. Does not attack, but does emit steam at intervals that make it invulnerable. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [13] Boss Enemies ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Bat Chieftain - Fought at the end of the Desert of Kuneer. Can only be damaged by Hot Coals. A faster and trickier flier than regular bats, however he shouldn't cause much trouble for you. Focus on the Chieftain and refilling your Hot Coals, and avoid the other bats. Hagsfiend Queen - Fought at the end of the Glauxian Brothers missions. Summons bats to create a force field. Very tricky flier and hard to combo against. You must first destroy the bats creating the force field before damaging her. After a short time period or a set amount of damage, she will re-summon the bats and therefore recreate her force field. Take out the bats, attack her, rinse and repeat. Final Boss - Fought at the end of the final mission. Use Hot Coals while pursuing him to damage him before the true final fight. This battle takes place in a very tight area so pay close attention to your surroundings. Keep him in sight at all times so you don't get pinned against a corner. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [14] Q & A ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Q: Will this guide work on versions for other systems? A: It should work for most systems, with possibly a few tweaks needed for the controls. Q: Is the game true to the book series/movies? A: Kind of. It's somewhat of a side story that intertwines with the book/movie. Q: Are there any cheat codes/glitches/secrets? A: There might be, but I don't know of any. Q: Are there any rewards for game completion? A: I did not receive any after getting gold in all missions (not including bonus missions) with one Owl body type. |||------------------------------------------------||| ||| [15] Contact & Thanks ||| |||------------------------------------------------||| Thanks to K.
